Worse Than John Beck as Starter

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/05/06/redskins-mentioned-as-possible-vince-young-destination/

This has better not be true, as it would be worse than trotting out John Beck in week one versus the Giants.  I see no reason to bring in Young, who has proven to be a nutcase waiting to bring down your franchise. Also, he doesn't listen to coaching (ask Jeff Fisher).  We are going to suck next year...deal with it. Let's wait and draft a QB (or several QBs), instead of buying someone else's retread.

Redskins' Draft: A++++

Despite my disdain for the NFL hype-machine that is the NFL Draft, I actually watched a good deal of it.  Of course, I have many gripes about the coverage that I will save for another post, but I mainly watched to catch the moment the Redskins used the #10 pick to reach for Blaine Gabbert, Jake Locker, Ryan Mallett, or even worse, Christian Ponder.  The tenth pick came around, and suddenly Jacksonville was drafting Gabbert.  Huh?

No, literally, I looked at my girlfriend (who was wonderful enough to watch a bit with me) and said, "Huh?" What just happened?  Finally, ESPN got around to explaining (another post, another post) that the Skins had traded down to 16 and picked up another 2nd round pick. AWESOME!

For every pick until the third round, I expected the Skins to grab Mallett (and I wouldn't have even been that mad, to be honest), but instead they traded down and down and down and ended the draft with a total of 12 picks.  That, in and of itself, is amazing considering the track record of this team over the last 15 years (even longer than that if you look at the Gibbs Era I).   What is even more mind-blowing, is that not a single pick in the NFL 2011 draft was a "Jersey" guy.

d. "Jersey" guy - a collegiate player, who upon being drafted into the NFL will generate a large amount of sales for his specific game jersey. These players are risky to draft, generally have amazing upside, but ruin teams if/when they do not meet expectations.

My grade for this draft (don't really believe in grades either, but that's beside the point) is high, not based on the quality of player the team drafted, but rather the plethora.  The Redskins could miss on 8 out of 12 of the drafted players and this draft would still be a success.

Why?

Because FINALLY, this team appears to "get it".  They FINALLY seem to be thinking differently than they have for the past 15 years.  They FINALLY seem to realize that more opportunities to find good players is better than that one player you can get right now.  The best way to describe this philosophy change is that this is the first regime since Gibbs Era I that doesn't believe they are one player away.  That is a massive change in philosophy from previous regimes, and I for one, welcome it.

I can finally hold my head high and say, "My team sucks!".
